Start with the light, not the colour
If the room faces north, you need a warm shade. Beige, brown or green keep the space friendly. Grey and bright blue quickly feel cold there.
If the room gets morning sun, a cooler shade can look lovely.
Then take the floor as your second starting point. It stays down longer than the wallpaper stays up, and that is often forgotten.
Which wall to paper
The wall behind the bed, in almost every case. You see it from the doorway, it is usually the shortest wall and it needs the fewest rolls.
The wall with the play corner against it is the worst choice. That is where most wear happens, and you do not even see it from the door.
One wall or the whole room
With a calm design, such as a narrow stripe or blocks, the whole room works well. It becomes calmer rather than busier, because your eye does not catch anywhere.
With a design that has a theme, such as dinosaurs or vans, keep it to one wall.

Designs that grow along
The difference between wallpaper that lasts and wallpaper you replace in three years lies in the theme, not the colour.

From nursery to boy's room to teenage room
Most parents paper twice: once before the birth and once around the age of four or five. You can skip that by choosing a design without an age for the nursery.
Around the age of ten the room changes again: a desk arrives and the bedding becomes plain. A narrow stripe in brown or green then reads as a grown-up wall finish rather than children's wallpaper.
For the early years: nursery wallpaper. For the years after: boy's room wallpaper.
Wallpaper above a desk or a building corner
A design with stripes or blocks works better above a desk than a design with a theme. It brings calm to a corner where a lot is already going on.
Non-woven wallpaper can handle a wipe with a slightly damp cloth. What you mainly want to avoid is papering the wall that gets the most use.
